Copper, around an eighth part tin, and perhaps a trace of other elements are compounded at temperature to form bronze. The addition of these variable elements determines the characteristics of the metal and its ultimate application. The inclusion of gold purportedly enhanced the tone and clarity of cathedral bells, though it’s difficult to imagine such a hard-won commodity willfully surrendered to the furnace. But such suppositions are besides the point. Bronze can be rigid. Bronze can be malleable. As an alloy that is easily persuaded or influenced, bronze is aptly suited for its abundant use in public monuments.
